Ever glazed over at the very mention of RFID? Ever wondered what it stands for and what it does? Well, the time to learn is now because RFID could, quite possibly, be the savior for many struggling retailers.

According to Mark Roberti of the RFID Journal,  it’s generally believed that the roots of radio frequency identification technology can be traced back to World War II.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has come a long way since those days however its progress in retail has somewhat stagnated for the past 20 years; until now that is.

Originally touted as a security device in order to lessen shrinkage (that’s theft to you and I) it never really took off, largely down to cost implications. In the early 2000’s, Walmart was the first big retailer to experiment with the new technology, which cost an astounding $1.50 per tag.

RFID tags today, however, are incredibly small and…….far less expensive; such that the cost is no longer an issue.
